You get the idea. Let’s take a look at some betta tankmates that will allow your fish to live a long, happy and healthy life with good neighborly interaction.

The right betta mates need to understand that he is living with a fish that can be surly, and even downright nasty at times. The perfect partner will allow his finny friend room to be himself, and shouldn’t clash lest there be dire consequences.

Apple Snail with Betta Fish

1 – Apple Snails

Apple snails are a great addition to a betta tank. These snails are small at birth, but can reach a size of 4 – 6 inches when adult, and add a peaceful nature to your betta. Bettas typically ignore them.

2 – Cory Catfish

Cory Catfish are the most common catfish kept in aquariums. Since they prefer the bottom of the tank, they typically do not run afoul of the middle to top-dwelling betta fish. They are hardy and very easy to breed and care for.

3 – Dwarf Frog

Betta tankmates need to be non-similar to the betta. Bettas attack other fish that resemble themselves. That is why a dwarf frog or two make such a diverse friend for your betta tank and a wonderful visual addition to your tank.

4 – Neon Tetras

Neon tetras are small (one inch max.), inexpensive fish that add motion and vibrant color to any tank. They respond extremely well with any betta fish.

Remember that every betta fish has a distinctive personality. What works for one betta may not work for the next one. And when your betta mates, all bets are off, and a previous friend can become a foe in your fighting fish’s eyes. Betta plant selection provides an excellent opportunity for you to improve your betta’s lifestyle. All bettas live longer and fuller lives when they co-habitate with plants as opposed to in an empty tank. The right plants release much needed oxygen, and provided much needed cover for betta fry and betta females in a betta mating tank. Let’s take a look at the top 5 choices for your betta aquarium.

Betta plant #1 – Vallis
The best possible plant for your tank is the Vallisneria spiralis. Commonly called simply Vallis, it requires little light, and can survive in pretty much any climate. Very hardy, and able to live at temperatures as low as 59 degrees, it is the perfect plant for cover, refuge and building bubble nests.

Betta plant #2 – Amazon Sword
This plant is actually native to the Amazon River basin, and is very adaptable. It has long, flat sword like leaves extending from the root cluster. Bettas love it, but it does require planting in gravel, and fertilizing. This plant does an amazing job in breeding tanks with fry and betta females.

Betta plant #3 – Java Fern
This lush, green plant can be anchored in your gravel or rocks, and reaches up to the top of your tank. It lives well in uncirculated water, and has long “arms” wave and flow with the current. They thrive in low to medium light. Java moss is a variation, but be forewarned. It can grow out of control and actually take over your betta’s swimming area.

Betta plant #4 – Hornwort
Like the Java Fern, Hornwort is long and flowing. It does not need to be anchored, but when anchored in your substrate, it provides great cover for fry and females. Put the long, vertical hornwort in the back of your betta tank, and smaller plants up front for a visually appealing aquascape.

Betta plant #5 – Foxtail
If you can imagine a deep-rust colored fox’s tail, you know this plant! Tall and wavy, it adds a color variation to all the typical green plants in a betta tank. I like to alternate it with Java ferns with shorter Amazon swords in front.

Whatever plant you decide to use in your tank, make sure it does not infringe on your betta’s space. He needs room to grow, and providing him with a controlled betta plant environment that is good for breeding and oxygen creation will extend his life extensively.

Betta fish are tropical fish, and in such, require about the same temperature range for their tank as other pet fish. However, betta temperature has to be regulated more closely, with few spikes or drops. Betta fish are highly susceptible to disease, more so than most other pet fish, and almost all of the diseases they catch are brought on by stress. Betta temperature fluctuation is a common cause of stress in these beautiful fish, and can easily be removed altogether by following a few simple rules.

1 – 3 to 5 watts per gallon

When purchasing a programmable heater, make sure that it is strong enough to provide the correct Betta temperature of 78 to 82 degrees. As long as you buy one that has 3 to 5 watts per gallon of Betta tank size, you will be fine. This ensures it is able to handle severe temperature drops should something go wrong. Sometimes, people forget to leave the heat on when they are going away for a couple of days, and a weak heater will freeze your fish dead.

2 – Manually check the temperature daily

Do not trust your heater! Manually check the Betta temperature every day. Just because you have a programmable heater with a thermostat does not mean it will last forever. Nothing made by man does. By manually checking the temperature at different times each day, you will find out how your Betta tank is faring. If you only checked it at night, you would not realize that sun from a window is heating the tank to a dangerous level during the day, for example.

3 – Backup thermometer

Your heater is on of thousands that are mass produced every day. Can you imagine the odds against every heater being perfect? Betta temperature should be double-checked by placing a small inexpensive floating thermometer in the tank. When you check the temperature on the heater’s display, check the thermometer’s too. I can not tell you how many times in the last twenty years I have had to replace a faulty heater, and I never would have known had I not purchased a backup thermometer.

Buying a good programmable heater is a great step towards providing the right Betta temperature for your fish. But it is only the first step. Consistently checking the temperature, and verifying it on a backup thermometer will guarantee you provide a healthy, warm home for your Betta Splendens.

Betta tank selection should be done before you buy any fish. Knowing which of the many offerings will make the best betta aquarium for your fish is not that difficult though. Let’s take a look at the pluses and minuses of the different betta tank styles.

We have all seen the tiny betta fish bowls in the pet stores. “If it is good enough for a pet shop owner, isn’t it good enough for me?” you think. Unfortunately, pet shop owners do not always do what is best for their fish when it comes to tank size. If all fish had a labyrinth organ in their head like the betta splendens, and could survive in very little water with no water movement, they would all be in the tiniest betta fish bowls and cups they could find.

There are basically three decisions you face when choosing a betta tank. Size, material and shape of our betta aquarium are the three criteria we are going to cover.

Betta Tank Size – Tiny bowl or 50 gallon?

As mentioned previously, bettas are kept in tiny cups or betta fish bowls not because they thrive there, but because that is the cheapest way pet stores can display them. When a betta is moved to a larger betta house, he immediately begins to show health improvements. His colors become more vivid, he gets much more exercise, and through his interactions with his surroundings, begins to develop a very unique personality. I have used all sizes and shapes, and recommend nothing smaller than a five gallon betta aquarium. A ten gallon tank is preferred.

Betta Aquarium Material – Plastic, acrylic or glass?

Most people do not think twice about the makeup of their betta tank. They grab one that is pretty or on sale. But the construction of your betta aquarium is super important. Never choose plastic! Plastic scratches easily, can fade in sunlight, and can become cloudy or foggy over time. Glass is the most common, and sometimes the least expensive, but the only drawback with glass is it is prone to breakage if struck.

Glass does give a great visual appeal to your betta tank, though. It is very clear and easy to view through. Acrylic is my choice here. Acrylic is not susceptible to breaking, lighter than glass, and does not get foggy. And if you ever need to get fancy and cut or drill your betta aquarium, it is much easier than glass.

Betta Tank Shape – Does this really matter?

The last thing on a new betta owner’s mind when choosing a betta house is shape. I mean, really, what matters? Does the fish really give a hoot what shape his betta aquarium is? The answer is a resounding YES! Betta fish live and thrive in shallow water in their natural habitat. If you asked your betta, he would tell you that house structure and shape are very important. Do not buy a deep tank, because he will not appreciate the whole area. Purchase a rectangular tank that is long and low. A typical ten gallon aquarium makes an awesome betta tank.

Conclusion

Alright, we now have selected a betta tank that is rectangular and low for maximum betta fish enjoyment (easy cleanup too). We have an acrylic or glass tank so we will enjoy a clear viewing experience for years to come, and we have at least a five gallon tank so our fishy can build his biggest and best body and personality. Betta bowls and pet stores go hand in hand. Fish stores can pack a lot of fish in a small area when they put them in these tiny betta bowls. But is this really a suitable betta tank? Think of it like this. How would you like to live in a ten foot by ten foot room with little air circulation, and no furniture, TV, computer, etc.? That is just how your fish feels. He can live in a small bowl, but his lifespan will be shortened, and he will never be all that he can be.

Betta bowls are often the only home a betta sees, because the person purchasing figures that the pet store must know what they are doing. “Why should I have to purchase a larger, more expensive betta tank when the professionals at the store house them in small round bowls?” you think. Well believe me, if they could get away with that with all their fish, they would.

The only reason all the fish in the store are in tanks instead of betta bowls is that most fish require water circulation to supply oxygen. Betta fish have a labyrinth organ in their head which allows them to exist in a habitat which has almost no air/water mixture. They can even survive an extended time out of the water entirely! Because of this ability, betta bowls end up being the way that the fish are housed, because it is the least expensive option possible.

Look at a betta the next time you see one in a tiny, cramped bowl. He is hardly moving, is dark in color, and looks lifeless. Now, watch one in a betta tank. If you do not know where to see one, go to YouTube and nose around until you see one in a nice five or 10 gallon betta tank. He is alert, his colors are more vivid, he appears healthier, he is interacting with his environment. He looks like a much more alive fish!

This is because he is more alive. The more stimuli you supply a betta fish, the more his personality grows. He will even start to recognize you as separate from other people. The experience he receives from his move to a bigger betta tank will actually help extend his lifespan, as well. I know, I know! You are all fired up and ready to buy betta fish, throw them in a bowl, and revel in their splendor. Well, there will not be that much splendor to revel in if you don’t do a few simple things first. And besides, you can extend your betta’s lifespan simply by following these three basic steps before you rush right out and buy betta fish.

1 – Buy Betta Tank and Supplies First!

People generally buy betta supplies after they have decided to buy a betta fish. They see a beautiful betta in a bowl, get the salesperson over, ask a few questions, and then say, “I’ll take him!”. Then they start asking questions about tank size, food, heaters, filters and everything else they will need. My friend, you will need to buy betta essentials and have your betta tank set up for at least 48 hours before you add your betta. When setting up a new tank, I do not even look at the bettas in stock. I get everything I need to have a happy, healthy betta and head home to set it up and get the water ready. Then, a couple of days later, I go on the hunt for that perfect betta.

2 – Betta Tank Size DOES Matter!

Even though betta fish can live their entire life in one of those tiny betta fish bowls, this will shorten their life dramatically. I can also honestly state that I have seen every fish that I transferred from a tiny bowl to a five or ten gallon betta tank become a whole new fish. Their colors will brighten tremendously. Their personality will develop in its unique way, and you will see a strong, healthy fish that interacts with you happily and daily. And if you ever plan on buying another betta, you can divide a ten gallon tank, thereby not having to purchase a new betta tank. Betta breeding is also made much more successful when you start with a five or ten gallon betta tank.

3 – Heat and Filtrate!

A sponge-type filter is perfect, because it allows good bacteria to develop in the sponge, and they help regulate ammonia levels. And a heater is definitely needed to keep that temperature in a nice 79 to 82 degree range. Make sure you buy betta heaters that have about 2 to 4 watts per gallon of tank size so it can keep up.

Getting betta water just right is the single most important step to increasing your betta lifespan from the industry average of six moths to a whopping three to five years. This will insure proper betta temperature and water quality. This generally covers heating, water set-up, filtration and substrate (tank flooring) before introducing your fish. Get a comprehensive Betta Care Guide to cover all the deatils.

Betta water in the wild is generally clear to brackish, with little or no water flow. However, betta water in captivity is a whole different situation. A betta tank must be cycled to lower ammonia levels, kept at a constant temperature range, and have constant water changes to ensure a happy, healthy fish.

An ideal betta tank is a five or ten gallon low, rectangular shape. Bettas do not live in deep waters in the wild, so purchasing a deep betta tank is a waste of resources, and your betta will not fully use or enjoy his surroundings. Get a glass or acrylic betta tank, because these do not scratch or fade like plastic, and provide maximum visual enjoyment.

Purchase a water treatment kit at your pet store, follow the directions and get your betta water ready. It is important to let the water sit for 24 to 48 hours to allow the chemicals to affect the water properly. This will get the nitrates started that are needed in your betta tank to offer the best environment for healthy fish.

Substrate is an important part of betta tank setup, since it plays host to good bacteria that form in the tank floor and eat harmful bacteria and ammonia that comes from the fish’s waste. A medium size gravel is fine. I have found that sand, while beautiful in appearance, is much harder to clean, and can grow algae much more rapidly than gravel will.

Purchase a heater that has 3 – 5 watts per gallon size of betta tank. This will keep the betta water at the proper temperature, 78 to 82 degrees. Also get a temperature gauge to double check the heater’s readout.

When purchasing a filtration system, get one that contains some type of sponge filter. This is a great place for good bacteria to live, and help your fish ward off disease by keeping the betta water at a healthy level. Just as the bacteria in your substrate cleans the water, this bacteria polices the nitrite and nitrate levels in your betta tank, keeping them at an acceptable level.

As you look around the pet store, you see plastic one gallon bowls, a betta tank that is curved in the front, some that are ten gallon, and all sizes and types in between. So why so many choices? What is the right betta tank for you? Let’s look at what the betta requires, and then we can make a selection from there.

Betta tank selection is generally made by the owner according to what THEY want, not what the FISH wants! This is backwards. If you want your fish to have a shorter lifespan than he could have, and live a less than full existence, then by all means choose whatever looks good to you. But if you want to provide your fish with the perfect betta aquarium according to his needs, then read on.

Your betta requires…

1 – A Low Wide Betta Tank

Bettas live in very shallow water. Purchasing a betta tank that is deeper than it is wide is a waste, he will never use all that space at the top. And it is harder for you to clean as well. Purchase a wide low tank, a ten gallon aquarium is perfect. There are tanks called “bow front tanks” that make ideal betta tanks.

2 – Very Little Room, Comparatively

Bettas can live a long, healthy, happy life in a betta house as small as two or three gallons. I personally use nothing less than a five gallon tank, and prefer ten gallons for maximum betta comfort. These larger tanks are also much easier to use, and attaching heaters and filters will not take up too much room. There is also ample room to add betta tankmates, plants and other “furniture”.

3 – 78 to 82 Degree Water

This means that a home that is too small for a heater is no good. It has to be big enough to house a heater that can keep him at a comfy 80 degrees or so. This also means a filter to move the water so there are no hot and cold spots.

4 – Fog and Scratch-Free Walls

Your betta wants to watch you. He wants to play with you, and perform for you, and he can not do that if he can not see through the walls of his tank. Besides, you want to see him and his betta tank in all their splendor. Choose glass or acrylic over plastic, because they will not fog up, get cloudy or scratch over time.

That’s it. Five gallon and up, low and wide, glass or acrylic and heated are the requirements for the perfect betta tank.

I Want to Buy Betta Fish – Where Do I Start?

Before you buy betta fish, you should get their tank set up. Some aquarists new to the hobby buy betta fish from a pet store and leave them in the tiny betta fish bowls they are housed in. While your betta can survive in a small amount of water with little to no water circulation, they certainly will not thrive there. You probably chose bettas because of their amazing colors and fin plumage. If you want your fish to thrive and be the happiest, healthiest betta he can be, you will need to upgrade to a larger betta house when you buy betta supplies.

I buy betta tanks no smaller than five gallons, and prefer ten gallon tanks, because they make breeding, and adding betta tankmates and betta plants much easier. With a larger betta tank, you will also be providing your fish with many more chances to show off their individual personality.

Betta fish prefer shallow depths, so when choosing a betta tank, buy something lower and wider instead of deep. Not only will this make your water changes and maintenance easier, but it will also give your betta an environment most like his natural habitat.

Your betta has to eat. So, when you buy betta fish food, make sure that the food size is appropriate for your fish. I prefer flakes at first if the betta is small, and then pellets at later stages of his growth. There are a lot of options out there, but I prefer a standard betta flake food product. You can also use freeze-dried brine.

You of course will need to buy betta supplies like a net, lid for the betta tank, heater and filter. Buy a sponge filter, because good bacteria will grow in the filter collection area, and will provide the nitrates your fish needs to fight off diseases. When purchasing a heater, three to five watts per gallon will be sufficient. Hood selection and accessories like nets are not as important. Get what works for you.

Buy your betta an aquarium test kit, and cyle his tank before you add him. There are many good betta care guides that walk you through the water cycling process. This is the most important step in your fish’s young life! Follow the directions, and add fish. Be forewarned, cycling aquarium water takes two to eight weeks, so you will have to be prepared to wait. But, when cycled properly, your betta tank will have pristine water quality, and your fish can live up to five years.
